Top cop asked to beef up force to tackle burglaries and anti-social behaviour

LONDONDERRY’S top cop has been asked to beef up staff and patrols to tackle a rise in burglaries and anti-social behaviour in the city on the brink of UK City of Culture 2013.

The Chair of the Londonderry’s Policing and Community Safety Partnership (PCSP) has advised that the partnership has asked PSNI Area Commander, Chief Inspector Jon Burrows, to review the specific policing requirements for the Council area in order to provide reassurance to communities especially given the recent rise in anti-social behaviour and residential burglaries.

Councillor Thomas Conway said: “The Policing Committee of the Derry PCSP has asked the Foyle Area Commander to bid for additional policing resources for the area given the forthcoming City of Culture programme, associated events and expected influx of visitors into the city and district in 2013.

“I also expressed the fear that our community officers could be extracted to provide additional cover for the 2013 event programme. As an elected representative for the rural area I want to ensure that the rural population is served adequately and that people remain safe in their own homes and properties.“

He continued: “I am confident that the PSNI has taken these concerns on board and I hope that in the coming months we will see additional police resources on the ground in the city and district.”
