Top of the Hill manin Vodka attack

A 52-year-old Top of the Hill man who hit a woman over the head with a Vodka bottle has received a suspended jail sentence.

Michael Noel McCann, of Celandine Court, was found guilty of assault occasioning actual bodily harm after a contest at the local Magistrate’s Court.

He was also convicted of making a threat to kill the woman on November 29, last year.

Londonderry Magistrate’s Court heard the injured party was left with bruising and a laceration after being hit with the Vodka bottle.

Defence Counsel, Eoghan Devlin,said McCann had a number of difficulties and is particularly isolated.

Mr. Devlin told the court the 52-year-old has had an alcohol addiction ‘for the better part of his adult life.

Suspending a six month sentence for two years, District Judge Barney McElholm said he would give McCann an opportunity to get on with his life but the suspended sentence would ‘remind him he can’t behave in this way’.
