Top performances in core subjects at Downshire

Some 95 percent of Downshire pupils have picked up eight or more top grades in their GCSEs.

Speaking at the school this morning, principal Jacqueline Stewart congratulated the outgoing year 12s on their achievements.

“Almost two thirds (62 percent) have at least one A* or A grade,” added Mrs Stewart.

Students performed particularly well in core subjects such as Maths, English, and Science, with 94 percent who studied higher tier Maths securing grades between A* and C.

Meanwhile, all 145 students in the year group picked up a grade in GCSE English.

Other high performing subjects included Art, French, Engineering, Performing Arts, and Music, with a “string of A* grades” in Horticulture, said Mrs Stewart.

A number of pupils shared their joy at their results, including Hayley Torrens. “I got six Cs, a D and a B and I’m going to do medical administration at NRC,” she said.

Hoping to pursue a career in physiotherapy is pupil Nicole Winters, who gained three A* grades, three As, two Bs and a C.

Mark Tweed secured an engineering apprenticeship at T&G Electrical with his results, while Lucy Allen is hoping to progress to A Level study at Carrick Grammar after picking up A*s, As and B grades.
