Top prize for local business support project

A local project aimed at helping businesses save money has scooped top prize at this year’s Sustainable Ireland Awards.

The STEM (Sustainable Together through Environmental Management) project, which has for two years been working closely with Banbridge District Council to support businesses in the area won the category “Leadership in Sustainable Development”.

The award recognised the project’s works with more 150 businesses to help them cut their energy, waste and water bills and so make them more competitive and reduce their environmental impact.

Manor Heathcare, The Outlet, REI Services and the Downshire Arms are among local companies aided by STEM in making savings and implementing an environmental management system where required.

Project Manager Anne Mason said: “We are delighted to have gained the STEM Project this recognition in such a tough category.

“The STEM Project is an excellent demonstration of how European money can make a real difference not only to the

businesses we have been helping but by encouraging them to operate in a more sustainable way the wider community and environment also benefit.”
