Top science book chosen by young Finaghy readers

Members of the Junior Reading Group, which meets every month in Finaghy Library, helped choose the winner of this year’s Royal Society Young People’s Book Prize, one of the world’s most prestigious awards for science writing.

The winner of this year’s Royal Society Young People’s Book Prize 2013 was named as ‘Look Inside Space’ by Rob Lloyd Jones by this year’s young judges - including the children meeting in Finaghy Library.

The young people from Finaghy Library were among over 1,000 children from schools and youth groups across the UK who helped choose the winning science book, which was picked from a shortlist chosen with the help of an expert adult panel of educationalists and scientists.

With over 70 flaps to lift to reveal the secrets of the Universe, Rob Lloyd Jones’ book ‘Look Inside Space’ gives a fascinating introduction to why the stars shine, how the moon was made, ‘glittering galaxies’ and the space station.

As one of the nominated judging panels, Libraries NI received a set of the six shortlisted books, stickers, post it notes and some pencils to assist with the judging process and each child received a certificate for taking part in the judging process.
