‘Tourism dividend’ for Carnlough from Brendan’s global fame?

THERE is a tourist dividend arising from the appointment of Brendan Rodgers to one of the biggest jobs in sport, MLA Oliver McMullan has urged.

The Sinn Fein representative said he wished the Carnlough man “great success” at Liverpool and reckoned his global profile could mean a tourism boost for the village.

“There was a great deal of recognition, and rightly so, of the golfers who won majors and I will be asking the Sports Minister to see that there is recognition in Carnlough of Brendan Rodgers’ association with the village,” he added.

“Brendan is a local lad who has remained in touch with his community over the years and is a great credit to the Glens. He continues to take an interest in the local youth when he returns,” Mr McMullan added.

Ulster Unionist MLA Roy Beggs said: “Warmest congratulations are due to Brendan Rodgers on being appointed to one of the top jobs in British and European sport.

“It really is a remarkable story of a young man from Carnlough, who had his playing career cut short by injury, becoming one of the top coaches in the game.

“I should add that it was with great foresight that Larne Borough Council’s Sports Forum awarded him their local coach of the year trophy a couple of years ago. The village of Carnlough and the entire borough of Larne will continue to be very proud of the achievements of one of their own.”
