Town project launched

An event took place recently in Lurgan YMCA aimed at stimulating the town’s youth workers into collaborative action.

The Lurgan Town Project (LTP) was piloted by the SELB Youth Service to develop a collaborative approach to community relations work 
in Lurgan.

Funding from IFI was secured for a two year period and helped to engage youth workers’ in a variety of cross-community initiatives.

One of the key outcomes from the LTP has been the publication of the Community Dialogue Tool produced by the Institute of Conflict Research (ICR), which highlights key community relations issues affecting young people across Lurgan town. This resource is designed to support youth workers’ with the delivery of cross-community projects within their organisations.

To continue building on the legacy of the Lurgan Town Project, youth workers will ensure that young people are provided with opportunities to develop relationships which promote mutual respect, understanding and acceptance. A recent event organised by full-time youth workers’, Stephen McNally, (Clann Eireann YC), Andy Barr, (Lurgan Youth Annexe), Mervin Johnston (Links Project), Adrian Hutchinson (Taghnevan) and Hugo Dale (Lurgan YMCA), focused on bringing part-time staff from their local youth clubs together to share the vision of the Lurgan Town Project and outline the Action Plan 
for 2014-15.

The event was a great success with approximately 60 part-time staff participating in a variety of explorative exercises. The event represents a landmark in the number of clubs taking part. It is hoped that this has stimulated youth workers’ to take positive action to help develop relationships and address community relations issues in Lurgan.
