Town to lead way in waste reduction

A brand new initiative to encourage more people to reduce their food waste and recycle more is being piloted in Lurgan '“ making it the first town in the UK to work towards this prestigious status!

Supported by Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council, the ‘Love Food Hate Waste Towns and Borough Initiative’ will champion food waste reduction and recycling by increasing awareness in homes, schools, community and businesses.

Once completed, this project will then be used as a blueprint to deliver the initiative Borough wide and will act as a best practice model for other Council areas.

A number of goals have been set to complete the initiative including engaging with one in every 100 people, developing a steering group representative of the whole community and organising high profile events to get everyone in the town involved.

“It is an absolute honour for Lurgan to work with the Waste and Resources Action Programme NI (WRAP) as a pilot launch town for this brand new initiative,” commented the Lord Mayor of Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon, Councillor Darryn Causby.

“There is so much planned for this Love Food Hate Waste initiative to ensure that everyone – from householders to businesses – are all on board with reducing their food waste and recycling more. We will teach you valuable information on how to make your weekly shop last longer, how to use up leftovers and how to create a compost heap at home, and this is just the beginning.

“We would like to call out to anyone who would like to get involved in this initiative – whether an individual, community group or business – to get in touch and find out how to be part of this important task to make Lurgan the first town in the UK with Love Food Hate Waste Town status.”

The Council will be working closely with Lurgan Market and linking in with the NI Year of Food and Drink 2016 to run cooking demonstrations, tasting sessions, competitions and giveaways.

There will also be educations sessions to make people more aware of where their food comes from, buying local produce and growing your own.
