Traffic calming issue ‘under review’

Transport NI has confirmed that it is looking again at the possibility of delivering a traffic calming scheme at Avondale Drive in Ballyclare.

The move comes in response to continuing lobbying from public representatives, including Alliance Alderman Pat McCudden and the PUP’s Scott McDowell, about the need for road safety measures in the vicinity of the children’s play park.

Divisional Roads Manager, Deidre Mackle told last Monday night’s meeting of the council’s Planning Committee that the issue is “under review” and that the department “would hope to deliver a scheme there.”

However, due to budget constraints within the department, it is unlikely that any measures will be introduced during the current financial year.

Mr McDowell, who has been in contact with the department about parking and road safety issues in the area, commented: “They have told us that they are planning to start surveying the area to see if it is eligible for traffic calming, but delivery of any scheme will be dependent on funding being available.

“I suppose the fact that they are looking into it is a start, and we will certainly keep pushing them from our end.”
