Traffic calming measures at Islandmagee Road

Transport NI is seeking feedback from Carrickfergus Borough Council over a number of traffic calming measures for Islandmagee Road, Whitehead.

In a letter sent to the local authority last month, the transport body outlined a number of issues with the route. These included an average recorded speed of 31.9mph, despite a 30mph limit being in place.

There have been five traffic collisions involving personal injury during a three year assessment period for the area, in additional to numerous problems with parking.

The proposed measures include the expansion of existing lay-bys to facilitate the current trend of end-on parking.

The remainder of the road will be marked into two traffic lanes to help control vehicle movements and reduce speeds, along with road humps and speed cushions.

A new central pedestrian refuge island is also proposed to assist with crossing the road.
