Traffic details for Saturday

The annual Apprentice Boys of Derry parade on Saturday will be the largest Loyal Order parade in Northern Ireland, with 15,000 people and 140 bands expected.

Traffic diversions will be put in place from around 10.30am in various points and traffic will not be allowed onto the parade route after 12pm. Cars parked on the parade route will not be able to move until the parade has passed their point.

ROUTES

There will be four smaller parades in the morning: 9am, Fountain estate, Kennedy Street, Kennedy Place, Hawkin Street, London Street, and Society Street; 9.30am, Society Street, City Walls, Society Street, Bishop Street, the Diamond, Diamond memorial, Ferryquay Street, Pump Street, St Columb’s (church service); 11.30am, The Fountain Estate, Wapping Lane, Carlisle Square, Carlisle Road, Ferryquay Street, The Diamond, Bishop Street, London Street, Artillery Street, and 11.45am, St Columb’s, Carlisle Square via London Street, Hawkin Street, Carlisle Road.

A large firework fired from a boat on the Foyle, to symbolise the breaking of the boom, will signal the start of the main parade.

The main parade at 12.30pm, which takes 2.5 hours, commences from Duke Street to Craigavon Bridge, Carlisle Road, Ferryquay Street, The Diamond, Bishop Street, London Street, Hawkin Street, Kennedy Street, Wapping Lane, Abercorn Road, Carlisle Square, Craigavon Bridge, Spencer Road, Dungiven Road, Dennet Gardens, Sheskin Gardens, Bann Drive, Finn Gardens, Mourne Drive, Dennet Gardens, Dungiven Road, Glendermott Road, Bonds Street and May Street for dispersal.

The Return Parade at 4.30pm via: May Street, Bonds Street, Dungiven Road, Clooney Terrace, Spencer Road, Craigavon Bridge Carlisle Road Ferryquay Street, The Diamond, Bishop Street, Palace Street and Society Street. On dispersal one band to parade: Society Street, London Street, Hawkin Street, Kennedy Street and The Fountain Estate.

Traffic diversions and delays are likely on Saturday while the parade takes place. The various clubs and their supporters will gather in the Duke Street/Spencer Road area from around 11am. The parade will be on the move from 12.30pm until 5.15pm.

Vehicles travelling from the Limavady direction will be diverted at Caw Roundabout via Crescent Link, Trench Road, Duncastle Road and Newbuildings. Cityside-bound traffic will use the Foyle Bridge.

Vehicles travelling from Strabane towards Limavady will be diverted at Newbuildings via Woodside Road, Gortinure Road and Trench Road.

Cityside-bound traffic and local residents will be permitted to use Victoria Road and the lower deck Craigavon Bridge, although delays can be anticipated. There will be no access from the lower deck of the bridge onto Duke Street, while Chapel Road, which is normally one-way traffic, will be available for vehicles to travel in both directions throughout the day.

Motorists should allow extra time for journeys and take extra care.
