Traffic flow to double on A5 by 2030

ROADS Service estimates the annual average daily traffic flow on the A5 Western Transport Corridor (WTC) between Londonderry and Strabane will increase from 12,030 vehicles in 2007 to 22,200 in 2015.

The roads authority believes the amount of vehicles using the road will have more than doubled to 26,000 by 2030.

The Minister for Regional Development outlined the Annual Average Daily Traffic (AADT) flow in 2007 and an estimate of the AADT for 2015 and 2030 for the A5 as taken from the Environmental Statement for the road.

He stated: “Traffic flow levels and carriageway standards, as contained in the Design Manual for Roads and Bridges, recommend, that at the year of opening, the Annual Average Daily Traffic flow for a two lane dual carriageway should lie between a minimum of 11,000 and a maximum of 39,000 vehicles per day.

“With the exception of the Aughnacloy to Ballygawley section, traffic flows on the A5 fall into this category. However, it is recognised that there are safety benefits in providing a consistent standard of road along the entire length of a route.”
