Throughout yesterday, Thursday, up to 20 friends and family scoured the river Foyle for any sign of Mr Mowbray, who was described as ‘vulnerable’.

William, from Primity Terrace, was last seen at a hospital in the Londonderry area at approximately 3.10pm on Tuesday, December 31.

Meanwhile, friends of the Mowbray family appealed on the social media site Facebook for volunteers to help form a civilian search for Mr Mowbray. The volunteers were asked to meet at 1pm at Newbuildings Community Centre yesterday.

The support shown to the family has deeply touched the Mowbray family, and Mr Mowbray’s son, Paul, told the Sentinel yesterday that they were “very grateful” for the support being shown.

“The support we have been shown so far is great and I just want to thank everybody for what they have done.”

Newbuildings Community Centre, which helped co-ordinate the search under the auspices of the PSNI, today said it had been called off.

The centre posted a message on its Facebook page this afternoon saying: “William (Billy) Mowbray has been located, sadly when he was found he had passed away. The family wish to thank everyone for there help and support. No further details will be disclosed at this time.”
