In 1988 during the pre-season Connor were playing a friendly against Glebe when a local player known as Bobby had brought his cousin along to watch the game, his cousin who had just signed for Leeds and happened to be an 18 year old Gary Speed.

Timmy Trimble told the Times: “He got on for at few minutes at the end, he was only 17/18 at the time. I don’t think he really wanted play with out of shape men on a muddy pitch getting changed in a portacabbin, and can you blame him? He had just signed for Leeds but to be fair he did.”
