Trail launch next week

A NEW tourism trail following St Columb’s journey of exile from the Londonderry area to Scotland will be officially launched in the city next week, according to Culture Minister Carol Ní Chuilín.

The Minister revealed the new Slí Cholmcille trail - a joint project between Foras na Gaelige and the Inverness-based Bórd na Gáidhlig - will be launched on November 10 in response to a query from DUP MLA Gregory Campbell.

Mr Campbell asked the Minister what plans she has to promote cultural tourism between Northern Ireland and Scotland.

She replied: “Foras na Gaeilge along with Bòrd na Gàidhlig are responsible for the Colmcille project which has developed with HLF funding a Heritage and Tourism trail – Slí Cholmcille – from Glencolmcille in SW Donegal through Derry City, Limavady and the Mid Sperrins to Argyll and the Western Isles. This site will be launched on 10 November in Derry.”

The new trail invites tourists to discover the story of Colmcille, St Columba or St Columb, the Irish saint who set sail from Londonderry in 563 to found his monastery on the Scottish island of Iona.

From Iona, Colmcille and his followers spread the word of Christianity to many parts of Scotland and Ireland.
