In the days following the hijack attempt it emerged the passengers on the Enterprise owed their lives to a local community worker.

Footage showed the man throwing luggage from the train which had been doused in petrol. Many of the bags belonged to a Scout troop returning to Dublin.

The community worker then confronted a would-be arsonist who had a five-gallon drum of diesel in his hands.

He told the angry mob he was on their side before gaining access to the driver's carriage. Once on board he persuaded the driver to start the train and remained with him until the safety of Portadown.
