Accident prompts calls for action at notorious Donaghcloney junction

CALLS for action have intensified after another serious traffic incident at an accident blackspot in Donaghcloney.

Ulster Unionist MLA Jo-Anne Dobson said she intends to lobby Roads Service to make the junction between the Banbridge Road and Moygannon Road safer after a three-car collision on Sunday evening resulted in a number of people being taken to hospital.

Speaking afterwards, Mrs Dobson said, “I have been contacted by a number of concerned constituents after yet another accident occurred at this dangerous junction on Sunday evening.

“I have been assured by the local PSNI that no serious injuries were sustained with all involved taken to Craigavon Area Hospital for treatment.

“However, I am extremely concerned that it will be only a matter of time before, if left unaddressed, this junction will witness an even more serious accident which may indeed result in fatalities.”

Mrs Dobson said she had contacted Roads Service last year regarding the junction after a similar incident and officials at that stage carried out a site visit.

“I will now be contacting Roads Service again as a matter of urgency following this latest accident, to again press for action to be taken to make this junction safer,” she added. “Residents are in danger and road users are in danger.”

The local MLA said constituents had also expressed concern that the junction was very close to a school bus stop and were worried about the risks to children returning to school next week.

Parents are understandably worried that this will once again prove a dangerous place for them to be,” said Mrs Dobson. “There have been a considerable number of accidents over the years at this particular junction and I know that many local residents and commuters would fully support measures being put in place to reduce the risk of accident.”
