Accidents bring traffic chaos

A NUMBER of traffic accidents brought chaos to the roads surrounding Lisburn on Tuesday morning.

A two car collision on the Old Hillsborough Road in Lisburn caused severe disruption to the early morning traffic and resulted in firefighters having to use cutting gear to release a 28 year old man from his vehicle.

Two others, a 47 year old woman and a 13 year old girl were also taken to hospital by ambulance.

In a seperate incident a 70 year old man lost his life in a three car collision on the Old Ballynahinch Road near Bailliesmills outside Ballynahinch.

Firefighters released another 38 year old male casualty who was taken to hospital suffering from neck, back and leg injuries while a 30 year old woman who suffered shock and chest injuries was also taken to hospital.

PSNI carried out initial investigations after which NIFRS released the body of the fatality.

In a third incident on Tuesday morning an overturned lorry caused major disruption for traffic on the M1.

It happened close to Blaris and the vehicle blocked both lanes of the countrybound carriageway.

A spokesman for Roads Service said it could take more than four hours to remove the lorry and clear the road.

Police are at the scene and the motorway is closed between junctions eight and nine.

Motorists have been advised to avoid the area.

Again it brought significant disruption for traffic heading out of Lisburn - with a queue said to be almost a mile long stretching from the Moira roundabout for trafiic heading to the motorway.
