Female casualty hospitalised after M2 collision

A female casualty was transferred to hospital following a road traffic collision on the M2 northbound this afternoon (Wednesday).

Lanes 1 and 2 of the carriageway were blocked following the incident which occurred in the vicinity of Fortwilliam Bridge.

Members of the emergency services were tasked to the scene shortly after 1.20pm.

Two fire appliances from Whitla Fire Station, one from Westland Fire Station and an appliance from Central Fire Station attended the incident.

Commenting on the incident, a Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service (NIFRS) spokesperson said: “Firefighters were called to a two-vehicle road traffic collision on the M2 Motorway involving a van and a car.

“Firefighters used cutting equipment to rescue one female casualty from the car. She was transferred to the care of the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service and taken to hospital. The incident was dealt with by 2.23pm.”

A Northern Ireland Ambulance Service (NIAS) spokesperson added: “The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service received a 999 call at 1.23pm on Wednesday, August 12 following reports of a two-vehicle road traffic collision at M2, Fortwilliam to Duncrue.

“NIAS despatched one emergency crew to the scene. Following assessment and initial treatment at the scene, one patient was taken to the Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast.”

A Department for Infrastructure (DfI) spokesperson confirmed the collision has been cleared from the carriageway.
