Gregg to feature on new National Geographic ‘doc’

‘Munich Disaster: I Was There’ follows the former Manchester United goalkeeper as he embarks on a personal journey to meet Vera Lukic, a Serbian woman whom he saved from the wreckage.

Harry was described as “the hero of Munich” for his courageous actions on that fateful night.

He told the Times yesterday: “The call just came out of the blue about the documentary which was shown a few years ago about me going back to Belgrade.

“I told the very nice programme makers that I do not want to be portrayed as any kind of hero. Apparently there are some new parts to the programme.”

Driven by a sense of duty to those who didn’t survive, Harry visits both the crash site and the hospital where many passengers lost their fight for life, before undertaking a poignant reunion with Vera in Belgrade.

Sandy Busby, son of the United team boss, Sir Matt Busby, has also given National Geographic Channel a brand new, exclusive interview in this updated version of the emotional programme about one of the most shocking football tragedies in history.

Football fans the world over united in shock when the plane carrying the hugely talented Manchester United team crashed on the runway in Munich in February 1958, claiming the lives of over half the 44 passengers on board.

Revealing the long-term consequences of the tragedy, Gregg’s reflective excursion into the past forms a fitting tribute to his team mates who are, to this day, remembered as one of the greatest teams of all time.

Sandy speaks to National Geographic Channel about his own experience of that harrowing time and provides rare insight into the family life of the Busbys and how they coped in the aftermath of the plane crash.

Sandy also shares a look at treasured photographs and other memorabilia, in this never-before-seen version of the documentary.
