Lifesavers are praised

TRIBUTES have been paid to two men who helped save a woman from burning to death.

The men jumped into action when they became aware of a house on fire in Dill Avenue last week.

The two men, who both live in Dill Avenue, began to kick at the woman’s front door in a bid to break into the house and save her.

An onlooker said: “They started kicking at the front door, but it wasn’t easy. The door had three locks on it. They’d been booting at it for two or three minutes when one of them went off to get a hammer.

“While he was away the other one got the door put in and went into the house. A crowd had gathered to watch what was going on.

“The women were shouting at him not to go in because it was too dangerous. He went in anyway, but didn’t get beyond the hallway because of the smoke.

“The fire brigade arrived shortly after and got the woman out. She’d been upstairs.”

As reported in last week’s ‘MAIL’ a woman in her fifties was rescued from a fire in Dill Avenue and was taken to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation.

The Dill Avenue resident said: “The fire brigade told the two men if it hadn’t been for their actions they mightn’t have been able to get in and save the woman in time.

“The two men deserve praise for their quick thinking.”
