The man in his 60s was fishing for salmon in the River Mourne near Strabane which is a popular angling spot.

Flood response teams from Derry recovered the body at 6.30pm on Tuesday.

He was found near Strabane golf club.

His body was discovered by another angler shortly before 6pm. A nurse who happened to be playing golf at the time was one of the first on the scene however the man had already passed away.

Mr McStay who lived between Lurgan and Aghagallon would have been well known in market gardening circles.

Upper Bann MLA Dolores Kelly said: “It is a terrible tragey. He was a very decent man and well regarded.”

Robbie Bryson of the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service said the cause of the death appeared to be accidental. He said seven units attended the scene.

The police and ambulance service were also in attendance.

Strabane SDLP councillor Patsy Kelly said the circumstances of the man’s death were not clear last night, but he did not believe it was suspicious.

“It’s tragic and very, very sad for his family,” he said.
