Speaking following a recent meeting with Translink, the PSNI and other associated stakeholders, Councillor John McDermott thanked all those involved for their commitment to ensuring everyone’s journey on public transport is a safe and secure experience.

He said: “For many, public transport is an essential service and is vital for helping people get to work, school and places of leisure. Unfortunately, this facility is threatened by senseless vandalism and other criminal activities.

“We are indebted to those who work so hard to maintain the safety and well-being of all public transport users. Through the ongoing work of the PCSP and the YMCA Detached Youth Work Team real progress has been made in engaging local young people in proactive activities and educating them on the detrimental impact of anti-social behaviour. This has been boosted by the welcome announcement from Translink and the PSNI that a ‘Safe Transport Team’ will be introduced in East Antrim. The joint venture will work to reduce crime and anti-social behaviour on public transport and at public transport hubs across the area with the implementation of dedicated teams using the transport network. This visual presence will not only deter anti-social and criminal behaviour but will also give users additional confidence and peace of mind when using these services.

“I urge anyone who witnesses anything suspicious while using the network to report it immediately to the Safe Transport Team and encourage parents and carers to know where their children are, particularly at evenings and weekends.”
