“Work will include the provision of footways enhancing opportunities for active travel in the area. Progress on delivering this scheme is dependent on acquiring the land necessary to facilitate the scheme. Completion of this stage will influence the timeframe for commencement of any works.”

Commenting on the move, Cllr Noreen McClelland commented: “I’ve been working on this issue for many years and therefore I am pleased that the Department under Minister Nichola Mallon is actively seeking to implement a road improvement scheme given the Hydepark Road in its current state is not suitable for the volume of traffic that is using it.

“Likewise, it is welcome news that in the interim the Department is also proposing to extend the existing 40mph limit on Hydepark Road, eastwards past the Hightown Road junction. This will include the narrow section of carriageway as a means to reduce traffic speeds.”

Mallusk SDLP representative Heather Wilson added: “Given the vast number of families now living in the Mallusk area who use this road several times daily, it is paramount that suitable infrastructure exists to ensure road safety. I look forward to the public consultation process getting underway and I would encourage as many residents to engage with it as possible.”
