Translink is to carry out work on three culverts close to Ballycarry in order to reduce the risk of flooding during periods of heavy rainfall and thus ensure the safety of the line.

During the weekend August 15-17, the line will close once the final train passes through on the night of August 14/15, reopening before the first train on the morning of Monday, August 17.

In a statement, the public transport company explained: “Bus substitutions will be in place between Larne Harbour and Whitehead throughout the weekend; please leave extra time for your journey. The NI Railways timetable will operate as normal between Great Victoria Street and Whitehead throughout.

“Culvert work at Ballycarry during the weekend closures will be undertaken during both daytime and night-time hours. Every effort will be made to keep any noise and disruption to a minimum at all times; work will also be carried out according to the relevant social distancing guidance to ensure the protection of staff and the community.

“Translink is grateful for the support and patience of the local community as we progress this essential work.”

There will be another scheduled line closure in 2021 to finalise these works and, Translink added, residents and passengers will be advised in good time.
