Dungannon UUP spokesperson, Ian Irwin, has welcomed the response from the Department for Infrastructure (DFI) regarding concerns over the increasing number of traffic accidents at the A45 Coalisland Road, Edendork, Dungannon.

In his letter to the Department, Mr Irwin raised serious concerns about the rising number of collisions at the junction of Farlough Road and Edendork Road, which has unfortunately become known as an accident ‘black spot’. With public safety a priority, he requested immediate remedial action, including traffic calming measures, to prevent further incidents and reduce the risk to motorists and pedestrians.

In their response, DFI confirmed that the site is already approved for potential upgrades under the department's council programme, though they acknowledged that the timeline for improvements is dependent on future funding. While current policy restricts the implementation of traffic calming measures on A-classified roads due to factors such as high traffic volumes and the existing 60mph speed limit, DFI assured that they are closely monitoring the situation and are committed to addressing the safety concerns as funding becomes available.

Mr Irwin said: "I am encouraged that the DFI is fully aware of the challenges at this location and has acknowledged the need for future improvements. While we understand the financial constraints currently limiting the speed of progress, I remain hopeful that, with continued advocacy and appropriate funding, the necessary upgrades can be prioritised. In the meantime, it is reassuring that DFI will continue to monitor the situation and work towards safer road conditions for all users."

Mr Irwin remains committed to working with DFI and other stakeholders to ensure the safety of all road users in the Mid Ulster region.
