A spokesperson for the Department for Infrastructure (DfI) said it followed discussions with the PSNI and local elected representatives.

“It is intended that the reduced speed limit will apply for 1.7km between St John’s Church and Islandmagee Primary School (senior campus)," the spokesperson added.

Work has now commenced on the legislative process which includes statutory consultations. Local residents will have the opportunity to view and comment on the proposals once the Notice of Intention is advertised in the local press.”

The development was welcomed by Larne Lough councillors, Danny Donnelly and Paul Reid.

Councillor Donnelly said he had raised the issue with police after receiving "numerous complaints" about speeding on the route. "I have seen how dangerous this is on multiple occasions particularly in the summer months with crowds headed for Brown's Bay," he added.

"There are houses, a cemetery, a business and a school all on this stretch of road where there is no footpath.

"I’m glad to say that the police have now agreed to support a reduction to 50mph on this stretch of the Low Road. This will take some time for the relevant legislation to be passed but residents can look forward to slower traffic and increased road safety on the Low Road."

Alderman Reid also highlighted residents' concerns on speed issues with the Department and PSNI. "Councillor [Gregg] McKeen and I were able to secure a site for speed detection," he said. "We welcome these recent developments on the island which will hopefully led to reduced speed on the Low Road."

Inspector Rosemary Leech added that the PSNI supported the proposed reduction following discussions between the local Traffic Management Officer and DfI.
