'Speeding concerns' at Magherafelt primary school

Two Mid Ulster councillors have welcomed the erection of the Speed Indicator Device (SIDs) at St Trea’s Primary School, Ballymaguigan.

Sinn Féin councillor Donal McPeake said : “I have campaigned for the speed indicator device to be located at the school location for some time now. The device was to be installed in May, but unfortunately due to Covid-19 restrictions placement was prevented”.

Urging road users to reduce speed, Councillor McPeake noted: “Speed indicator devices are particularly beneficial when tackling accelerated speed. I have liaised with concerned parents and residents from the Ballymaguigan and Newbridge areas about addressing excessive speed, particularly outside St Trea’s Primary School.

“These devices are short-term solutions and the consequences of speeding within a school area can be devastating.”

Magherafelt SDLP Councillor Christine McFlynn said the signs are useful aids for drivers, highlighting the speed their vehicle is travelling along potentially dangerous parts of the road.

“I requested a SID sign at this location last autumn and my party colleague Mid Ulster MLA Patsy McGlone has also lobbied for its introduction. Due to high demand, and the restrictions imposed by the coronavirus pandemic, its installation has been delayed until now,” she said.

“The Mid Ulster Police and Community Safety Partnership manager has also confirmed that more SID signs have been purchased and will be placed across the district over the coming weeks.”

She urged all drivers to be extra vigilant near schools.
