Surgeons removedamaged trees

MAGHERAFELT District Council was forced to call the help of a local tree surgeon recently to remove a number of ‘dangerous’ storm damaged trees on council property.

It occurred in January when several mature trees were blown down following high winds.

A workshop roof was also damaged at private property adjacent to Meadowbank old pavilion when a large fir tree split and collapsed on top of the property. Two trees at the site which were deemed to pose a high risk have been removed.

A number of trees were blown over at Polepatrick Park during the bad weather, but were “cut up and removed” by council employees according to a Operations report presented to representatives last month.

Storm damage was also reported to have blown off a number of tiles from roofs at Cahore Road and Boyne Row changing rooms and two large roller shutter doors were blown in at the recycling centre in Magherafelt.

“Temporary measures were put in place by depot staff to allow safe employee and vehicle access to the building until a specialist contractor was available to repair the doors,” stated the report.
