Motorists have been warned that a major resurfacing scheme is continuing along one of Northern Ireland’s busiest routes this weekend.

The A2 Sydenham by-pass in east Belfast is closed all weekend until 6am on Monday into Belfast from Tillysburn Junction through to Dee Street.

This is the main route from Bangor to Belfast and for travellers to and from Belfast City Airport.

The £3.8 million road resurfacing scheme led to lengthy tailbacks when it began last weekend. The scheme is likely to continue until Monday, November 25.

Passengers flying out of Belfast City Airport have been warned to leave themselves more time to get to there due to roadworks on the Sydenham bypass. There was heavy congestion last weekend after roadworks began on the £3.8 million resurfacing project on the road in east Belfast. The Department for Infrastructure said it is aware that projects of this scale will “inevitably cause some disruption and delays, however all work has been carefully planned in order to minimise inconvenience to the public and complete the scheme in as short a period as possible”.

Road-users are warned that delays should be expected and to make sure to plan ahead.

During periods of closure, a diversionary route will be clearly signed via Holywood Road, Newtownards Road and Middlepath Street. An alternative route will also be available via Holywood Exchange, Airport Road and Sydenham Road. Alternative routes will also be signed for cyclists and pedestrians.

Some weekend and overnight lane closures will also be required on the countrybound lanes to ensure the safety of road workers and the travelling public while deep drainage work is carried out along the central reservation.
