Woman airlifted off Rathlin after bike accident

A woman had to be airlifted off Rathlin Island following a bicycle accident on Saturday afternoon. The woman in her fifties had fallen from her bike and sustained serious, thought not life threatening injuries.

The casualty is being treated at Altnagelvin Hospital in Derry for a broken hip and head injuries.

Chairman of Moyle District Council, Independent Councillor Padraig Mc Shane said;

“I would like to begin by wishing the lady a speedy recovery following what was a quite traumatic event. I would also like to use this opportunity to highlight that wearing the right clothes and good fitting helmets are a must for those keen on cycling.”

Councillor Mc Shane went on to add; “While it is not the case on Rathlin, many people have now returned to the bicycle as an alternative mode of travel due to unreliable public transport or expensive fuel costs.

In many cases they last rode a bike when they were at school and have little experience of riding alongside heavy traffic. With more people taking up cycling again, there should be refresher course and more help offered to those who are getting on their bike for the first time.”
