TransportNI to take actionover Drumahoe lorries

That’s according to Londonderry SDLP MLA Mark H. Durkan who said he recently received confirmation from the Department of Regional Development’s (DRD) Arms-Length body, TransportNI, that it will respond to traffic concerns of residents in Old School Field, Drumahoe.

He said: “I arranged a meeting with TransportNI representatives and the PSNI following contact from a number of residents in the Old School Field Area of Drumahoe regarding traffic concerns.

“Residents were very concerned after vehicles, particularly large lorries were parking at the bus stop and in some cases on the footpath. This seriously impacted on the ability of residents to get out onto what is already a very busy road on the main Derry-Belfast route.”

The local SDLP MLA said the decision to allow cars travel faster through the village has not helped matters.

“These concerns were compounded by a recent inexplicable decision to increase the speed limit through Drumahoe from 30 miles per hour to 40 miles per hour.

“Following the site meeting, I am pleased that TransportNI have agreed to take action to rectify the situation at the bus stop for residents and will re-examine the speed limit in the area.”

The development follows the revelation in April that TransportNI was to take action at a nearby stretch of road at Altnagelvin.

A senior development manager at Transport NI confirmed that different coloured road surfacing was being introduced as a speed management measure at the busy Daly’s Brae and Glenshane Road junction at Altnagelvin.

Des McFarlane, a network development manager, at TransportNI, wrote to Waterside SDLP MLA Martin Reilly, after he raised safety concerns in February.
