Treasure Tree masterpiece

The recently opened ‘Treasures of the Middle Ages’ exhibition hosted by Coleraine Museum in Coleraine Town Hall has received an unusual new treasure for the collection.

The ‘Treasure Tree’, produced by Louise McLean of ‘Atlantic Craft NI’ in Portrush was made from a range of coloured willow with different techniques.

The tree is currently decorated with treasures from children from the Coleraine Polish Saturday School who recently attended the ‘Treasure Fun Day’ held at Coleraine Town Hall last month.

Coleraine mayor, Councillor David Harding, said “We are very privileged here in Coleraine, to have such an impressive and important exhibition on display. I encourage everyone to go into the Town Hall and see the beautiful artefacts and learn a little more about Polish culture.”

Sarah Carson, Collections Access Officer at Coleraine Museum, said, “Louise has produced a treasure tree which is a whimsical masterpiece full of nooks, crannies and intrigue.

“Kids from the Coleraine Polish Saturday School did a fantastic job decorating the ‘Treasure Tree’ with their very own treasures. We will continue to add more treasures to it from the Coleraine Museum Collection during the exhibition.

“The ‘Treasure Tree’ is a wonderful addition to the ‘Treasures of the Middle Ages’ travelling exhibition which comes from the State Archaeological Museum in Warsaw, Poland. It showcases stunning medieval jewellery such as bracelets, rings, earrings, buckles, brooches, pendants and necklaces – all demonstrating the incredible craftsmanship of medieval Polish jewellery makers.

“Alongside the exhibition is Coleraine Museum’s ‘My Polish Treasure’ exhibition and Limavady Museum’s Broighter Hoard display, which includes a replica of the Broighter boat.

There are lots of free events to enjoy at the Town Hall over the next few weeks . On Thursday, May 22 Richard Warner will be providing a talk on the Broighter Hoard at 7pm. On Thursday, May 29 there will be Town Tours with Nick Brannon at 6.30pm. On Saturday, May 31 and Saturday, June 14 there will be a bracelet making workshop with Elephant Juice at 2pm. The workshop is free but must be booked, by calling 028 7034 7234 or emailing [email protected].

The exhibition will end on June 21 with a special Treasure Fun Day from 1pm until 3pm with storytelling, Polish paper craft and more.
