Tree concern

A PLEA was made for none of the trees in Lurgan park to be cut down in March 1989.

The supposed plans were for half of the trees in the park’s main avenue to be cut down and Councillor George Savage revealed that he had heard a professional tree consultant had been contacted and had already been visiting the park and wanted to know if this was true.

Chief recreation officer, Harry Averley, said that the question of the main avenue had been discussed in the recreation committee, saying they had decided to seek legal advice as to how the avenue could be maintained.

He also said there had been talk of thinning the trees as there was too much competition between them.

Councillor Savage said Lurgan Park was one of the most unique in Northern Ireland and he would be opposed to the removal of any of the trees, saying that if they started pulling down these trees then others would die.
