Tree hits car near Maghera as Storm Gertrude sweeps across Mid Ulster

It is not known whether anyone was injured in the incident.

The Met Office had issued an amber warning for high winds and that remains in place until later today.

Storm Gertrude - with gust reaching 85mph - has broken electricity poles and downed trees.

In Magherafelt area trees were brought down on the Desertmartin Road and Aughrim Road.

A branch of a tree came down across the Moneymore Road outside Cookstown.

Motorists should expect traffic disruption during the rush hour in some areas.

Meanwhile, a yellow snow and wind warnings have also been issued overnight into Saturday afternoon.

They will be in place across all counties from just after midnight.

The Met Office said: “Frequent wintry showers, heavy at times, are expected across northern UK during Saturday.

“Snow accumulations will be more localised, with around 1-3 cm possible, primarily above 100 metres.

“Road surface temperatures are expected to fall below freezing Friday night into Saturday morning, bringing some icy patches.”
