Trevor clocks up the miles in Land’s End cycle challenge

In a bid to raise funds for the RNLI, Larne FG Wilson employee Trevor Abernethy recently undertook the huge challenge of cycling from John O’Groats to Land’s End.

Trevor, who works as a Sap Business Analyst at the Old Glenarm Road factory, decided to take on the 900-mile journey to support and raise money for the Portrush branch of the RNLI.

Trevor was supported in his mission with sponsorship from colleagues at FG Wilson, as well as by a donation from the company, who also provided him with the time off work to undertake the cycle.

Trevor cycled an incredible 550 miles in just over five days but then suffered a knee injury and was forced to retire. He is hoping to undertake the challenge again and to cycle the whole 900-mile route.

He explained that it was a difficult challenge due to the very warm weather he experienced on the trip.

“I wanted to set myself a tough challenge and thought a cycle from John O’Groats to Land’s End would really test my stamina. The cycle was a great experience as I saw some beautiful scenery but I struggled with the high temperatures and a number of steep hills along the journey. I had great support from my family and friends, and colleagues. FG Wilson also donated £350, all of which helped keep me motivated.”

Trevor added: “Unfortunately on the fifth day of the cycle I got sharp pains in my knee and eventually I couldn’t put pressure on it and was forced to stop. I’m hoping to take on the challenge again and next time make it the whole way to Land’s End.”

Noel Jones, HR director from FG Wilson praised Trevor for his achievement.

“Trevor has shown incredible stamina to cycle over 500 miles and his determination to try and keep going despite his knee pain is admirable. He has so far raised £950 for the RNLI and we look forward to supporting him in his next challenge.”
