Trevor tribute

' A UNIQUE human being' - that's how murdered Portstewart man Trevor Spiers has been described by a family member.

In an interview with The Coleraine Times, Trevor's aunt, Ciara McKinney, spoke about the nephew she described as the 'rock' of the family.

Mr Spiers (28) lost his life following an assault outside a nightclub on the Promenade in Portstewart on December 13 last year.

To date four men have been charged in connection with the incident.

"He was just a unique human being, who was a joy to be around," said Ciara.

"Trevor was fiercely loyal to his friends and his family.

"You could always rely on him. If you were down he would lift you, he was just the rock of the family.

"His thirst for life was just infectious.

"Trevor was part of a large family and he had a unique relationship with each of us.

"He took on the father role to his sisters Orlaith (19) and Nicola (25), and protected and cared for his mother.

"Trevor was loved by all the children in the family. He was just so full of fun, they loved to see him coming.

"There are just no words to express the void in our lives," she added, fighting back the tears.

In an appeal for information about the murder, Ciara added: "We know there are people who were out that night that still haven't come forward. I would appeal for them to get in contact with the police as soon as possible."

As a tribute to Trevor, his friends and family have organised a fundraising concert in Lush! Live later this month.

"Trevor was a very talented artist and musician.

"He loved music and had written many songs. A line from one of his songs is imprinted on his headstone.

"His friends have remained very close to the family, and that is very comforting to all of us.

"When the idea came around about the concert - 'Beers 4 Spiers' - we thought it would be a great tribute to Trevor and that it would help us keep his memory alive.

"The concert will raise funds for CRY, a charity that is very close to the hearts of the people of Portstewart, after the sudden death of Aaron Lundy. Trevor knew Aaron very well as they both grew up together."

The concert, featuring 12 top local bands, including The Reno Room, Fool Fighters and The Pat McManus Band will be held in Lush! Live on Friday, August 27.

Trevor's father, James, is also travelling from Norwich to take part in the event.

Tickets, costing 10, are on sale from Etherson's Butchers in Portrush, Sheila's Sweet Shop in Portstewart and the Top House Off Licence in Portstewart.
