Tribute following death of Mayor of Carrick

The community of Carrickfergus is in mourning following the death of the Mayor, Alderman Charles Johnston.

Mr Johnston, a freeman of the borough, died on Tuesday evening after a courageous battle with illness. He was 64.

DUP colleague David Hilditch MLA extended sympathies to the Mayoress, Patricia Johnston, Mr Johnston’s son Samuel, daughter Charlene and wider family.

Mr Hilditch said: “It’s a very sad day for the borough, which Charlie loyally served for many years.

“As well as a councillor, he was active in a wide range organsations including the Orange and with Carrick Rangers. My thoughts are with his family at this very difficult time.”

Mr Johnston was also closely associated with Greenisland Primary School, where he served for over two decades as chair of the board of governors.
