Tribute honours UDR members

THE Larne branch of the Regimental Association of the UDR will present a book of remembrance and a desktop lectern for dedication in the Old Presbyterian Church of Larne and Kilwaughter this Sunday (May 2).

The book contains the names of those who served in the former E company (Larne) and who are now deceased. Chaplain to the branch, Rev Dr Paul Reid, will lead the service and perform the act of dedication at morning service, starting 10.30am.

Guest preacher on the day will be Rev Noel Williamson

Branch chairman, Neville Telford, said: "It is fitting that in this our 40th anniversary year of the formation of the regiment, we create a permanent record as our tribute to those who put the needs of a community threatened by violent disorder before their own and stepped up to the mark.

"Our branch members have pursued a policy of ensuring the regiment is not consigned through inaction and apathy to the dustbins of social history and have already placed commemorative plaques in three churches in the Larne district.

"With this book of remembrance we go one step further, by removing the anonymity of the individuals and proudly recording by name those who served in this part of the regiment with honour."

Dr Reid, who said he was privileged to be associated with the Larne branch of the UDR Regimental Association, commended the members on their thoughtfulness in perpetuating the names of former colleagues and issued a warm invitation to friends and relatives to join with VIP guests on May 2 to witness the act of dedication.
