TRIBUTE: Joseph Devlin

BALLYMENA & District Homing Pigeon Society have paid glowing tribute to one of their longest serving and most esteemed members, their Chairman, Joseph (Joe) Devlin, who passed away recently.

A truly dedicated member and great worker for the club, Joe had been preparing the usual setting up of the club for the Show season right up until his untimely death.

A painter and decorator by trade, Joe, who was unmarried, had lived for a time in both Randalstown and Kells before moving to Ballymena where he resided on the Toome Road.

He kept a small team of birds himself and hardly a season passed when he did not win a few races.

Ballymena & District HPS secretary, Willie Reynolds recalled that Joe really enjoyed flying the birds right through to the longer distance races.

A good number of the fancy representing the local clubs attended Joe’s funeral last Saturday.

Following Requiem Mass he was buried at St MacNissi’s Church in Randalstown.

Joe will leave a big void at the Ballymena & Dist HPS and the officials and members extend their sincere sympathy to his sister Mary and family circle at this very sad time.
