Tribute to Mervyn John McCormick

Mervyn John McCormick (right) became a firm friend of all at Molly’s on Main Street where he would have helped out during busy periods.

Mr. McCormick, originally from Ballinlea Road, Armoy, died in hospital a day after falling over at his home at Henry Street in the town. He was 41 years old.

A quiet, inoffensive member of the community, Mr. McCormick was a bricklayer by trade and came from a respected family. His manner and demeanour endeared him to many especially at Molly’s where he formed a firm friendship with staff.

Mr. Sammy Mullan, proprietor of the restaurant, said Mervyn would be sorely missed.

“He came in most days and when we were busy he would have cleared tables and helped out where he could. If a mother was struggling with a pram he would jump up and immediately assist by holding the door open.

“It was the same with elderly or anyone who needed help. Even when he went outside for a smoke, people would have joined him for a chat. He was a very kindly man, whom I first met when I ran the restaurant at the North Irish Horse in Dervock, and a lot of people are genuinely saddened at his passing.

“It was obvious that Mervyn had a good Christian upbringing because he didn’t like to hear anyone swear and that was something we all noticed,” Mr. Mullan said.

Nothing but good was said of Mr. McCormick at the funeral service in Ramoan Presbyterian Church on July 6.

He is survived by his parents, Samuel and Charlotte McCormick, a sister, Karen and brother, Nigel who lives in New Zealand, to whom sympathy is extended.
