Tributes are paid to Norman Hunter

TRIBUTES have been paid to one of the north west's most prominent business men who sadly passed away last week.

Legendary butcher Norman Hunter died peacefully at Altnagelvin Hospital on Wednesday, March 24 after an illness. The Limavady businessman whose award winning butcher's and deli operates on Main Street was described as "a credit to the town".

Local Councillor Leslie Cubitt said Mr Hunter, who transformed the town centre premises in 1924 into an accolade butchery, will be sadly missed.

"Norman Hunter was a credit to the town, the Borough and the north west. He opened one of the best butchers in County Londonderry and I know people that travel far and wide back then and today to buy his produce," said Mr Cubitt.

"He was a great example of a businessman and will be greatly missed by all who knew him."

UUP Alderman Jack Rankin echoed his fellow councillor's comments.

"Norman was a very well known businessman throughout the borough and across the entire north west. A great man who was very well respected," he said.

Mr Hunter's butcher's and more recently, his deli, has been recognised continually since its opening in the early 1920s for top quality meat and produce.

His son Ian took over the premises just over 20 years ago and has elongated his father's success in butchery, gaining recognition from independent critics from across the UK.

Mr Hunter was buried on March 26 at Christ Church, Limavady. He is survived by sons Ian and Brian. He was also a devoted, father-in-law, grandfather and great-grandfather.
