Tributes following death of Ardboe's '˜kind, caring' Sister Rose Coney

Born in May, 1936, the daughter of Neil and Catherine Coney joined Daughters of the Cross in 1964 as Sister M Goretti.

The Killycanavan native was based in Dublin. She leaves behind her sisters, Josie Scullion, Brigid Malone, Margaret Gilmartin and nieces Margaret Rose Scullion and Olivia Scullion.

One tribute on Ardboe Gallery after her death on May 5, said: “Rest in peace my dear Sister Rosie. You will be sadly missed by many... very kind, caring, and giving you were very loyal to your football, especially your native Ardboe team and Tyrone.”

“Rest In Peace Rosie. A Great Lady A Special Friend To My Parents Joe And Anna Quinn RIP,” said another.

“My sincere condolences to all the family and friends of Sister Rose.”

John Hurl Senior has also shared his memories of Rosie on his Facebook page.

He said: “There is only a few of us left that could tell this story.

“Back in our school days down in a field behind Rosie’s home we use to assemble to play a football match, first of all two people were selected to what was known as calling sides, there was up to 20 to pick from and believe me Rosie was very high on the list.

“At that time there was the Doris, McElroy and Coney families etc, all who played later for Ardboe and Rosie mixed it with the best of them.

“I have no doubt she would have made it to the top had she been around nowadays and the refs would have been busy with red cards, as the saying goes she would have went through you for a short cut.

“She left us all with great memories, may she Rest In Peace.”
