Tributes for former council members

Between them they served for sixty years on Coleraine Borough Council, and now two former councillors are to be honoured for the contribution they made to the borough.

Sadly this year, Coleraine Borough Council lost Alderman James McClure and Councillor David McClarty.

James McClure was a councillor for over 37 years, and was Mayor of the Borough three times. David McClarty served for a total of 24 years and held the position of Mayor twice during this period.

Both men were long standing, much respected and well liked councillors, who tirelessly worked for the people of the Borough and on behalf of Council.

At last Tuesday night’s Council meeting members agreed to recognise and mark the contribution and character of both men.

In a proposal put forward by Council Chief Executive Kieran Doherty, members agreed to name the Members’ Lounge at Cloonavin ‘The James McClure

Members’ Lounge’ and to dedicate the stage in Coleraine Town Hall to the memory of David McClarty.

Mr Doherty told members at last Tuesday’s meeting that the families of both men had been consulted and were in favour of the tributes.

The Chief Executive said that commemorative plaques would be erected at each location with a small ceremony to be held in January, in consultation with the families.

Members agreed to proceed with the proposed tributes.
