Tributes for Uel

Uel was the dearly loved father of Andrea, Leanne and Alastair and the son of Freddie and the late Susan.

Uel was educated at the Abercorn Primary and Banbridge High School and after leaving school he went to the Royal Inniskilling Dragoon Guards attached to the tank regiment.

Coming back to civvy street he was then employed with The Royal Mail serving the district as a postman.

A keen football supporter, he followed the fortunes of Banbridge Town and Manchester United FC. He was a keen dart thrower, playing in the Banbridge Dart League and a committee member of Banbridge Town Football Club.

He belonged to Scarva Street Presbyterian Church and was a member of the Royal British Legion, Banbridge Branch.

He is survived by one son, two daughters, four grandchildren Sarah, Alfie, Charlie and Noah, and three sisters Mrs Elizabeth Mawhinney (Dromore), Mrs Violet Buchanan (Donacloney) and Mrs Jeanette Camlin (Ballyward).

The funeral took place from his daughter’s home for a service in Scarva Street Presbyterian Church. His comrades from Association paid a tribute of a ‘Guard of Honour’ at Scarva Street Presbyterian Church and they with members of the Royal British Legion paid their final tribute at the graveside by reciting ‘They Shall Grow Not Old’ and the dropping of poppies.

The Rev Dr Finlay paid a fitting tribute and the hymns ‘What a Friend we have in Jesus’ and ‘Rock of Ages’ were sung. Mr Tom Haire presided at the organ.

Interment took place in the New Cemetery. Family flowers were placed on the grave and donations in lieu are being sent to William Bell and Co Funeral Directors 23 Kenlis Street, Banbridge, BT32 LR for the Renal Unit Daisy Hill Hospital.

William Bell and Co had charge of the funeral arrangements.
