Tributes for Waterside community worker, Beth

St Augustine’s Church was filled to overflowing at the weekend for the funeral of Beth Neely, late of Tullyally.

Such was the high regard for her, that many of those who attended the funeral service were unable to sit inside the church and had to stand outside.

The service was conducted by Rev Malcolm Ferry, Rector, who spoke of Beth’s life in the community, as a member of the congregation at St Augustine’s and her role as a mother.

“Why else would Beth be known across the divides of our city, across social or any other barrier that you care to mention? Beth had that wonderful touch of friendship. For many in the community where she worked tirelessly they knew her friendship. She was one of the back ground movers and groovers. She saw what needed to be done and often got it done long before others had even spotted it needed done,” he said.

Rev Ferry continued: “There was no half measures with Beth. Your church was your strength and I know our congregation will miss her friendship and how she brought her zest for living and faith into action.”

Describing her as ‘the head of the house’ he said she was the boss, the manager, the cleaner, crèche leader, cook and knitter.

“There was no job to great or too small for Beth not to tackle,” said Rev Ferry.

Following the service tea was served and as the funeral moved off a guard of honour was formed by members of the Pink Ladies.

Also paying tribute to Beth was Linda Watson, Coordinator at Caw Nelson Drive Action Group, who said: “Although Beth came from the Tullyally area she became very much a part of our community a few years ago. She regularly attended the Caw Luncheon Club and Caw Pink Ladies group as well as many other community activities. Although a senior herself, she looked after other senior citizens making sure they got home safely. Beth was a great friend to many of us and she will certainly be sorely missed by the Caw Former Director of St Columb’s park House, Brian Dougherty, who had a long-time association with Mrs Neeley, said: During my time working in Tullyally, Beth was a key driver of the Tullyally and District Development Group. Her energy and commitment was boundless. Her passion for the area was obvious and she was the leading light in initiating the senior citizen activities. She was an amazing lady who will be sadly missed. Her family who can be proud of the contribution she made to her community over the years.”
