William had been unwell for some time but bore his illness with a determination, courage and dignity that were very much the mark of the man.

William, a member of Cairndhu Golf Club for some 50 years, served on the club’s council and was club captain in 1999 and club president from 2006 to 2008.

He carried out all his roles with distinction in his own inimitable style and with enthusiasm.

William’s golfing prowess was, in his own words, “limited”.

However, it did not stop him picking up a trophy or two along the way.

It was not necessarily competitiveness that attracted William to golf; he played for the enjoyment of the game and for the company and camaraderie of his close circle of friends.

He was an inveterate practical joker who enjoyed catching out friends and colleagues.

At the same time, he graciously accepting his fate when the roles were reversed.

William was a great organiser and innovator, as displayed when he got up at first light on January 1 2000 to drive a golf ball up the first fairway.

William then retrieved the ball, cleaned it and had it mounted on top of a custom-made trophy designed to reflect the new millennium.

The trophy is still played for annually among past captains of the club.

William was also an early supporter of the club’s environmental credentials.

Due to his ornithological interest, he introduced bird boxes which he had constructed and placed around the perimeter of golf the course.

William was a very popular man and will be sadly missed by the members of Cairndhu Golf Club for his thoughtfulness, his wit, his repartee and for the spirit with which he always played the game.

He is survived by his wife Christine, daughters Lesley and Helen, son Michael, grandchildren and sister Margery.

It is to them and the wider family circle that the thoughts and condolences of the captain, council and membership of Cairndhu are brought at this sad time.
