Tributes to local police officer killed in hunting accident

It’s understood Constable Claire Lowe had been taking part in a hunt near Ballygowan on Wednesday afternoon (Oct 26) when she came off her horse at a fence.

Despite the efforts of emergency services personnel, the 39-year-old Saintfield woman died from her injuries a short time later.

Responding to the news of Constable Lowe’s tragic death, Superintendent Sean Wright paid tribute to her, saying: “Claire was an experienced and professional police officer with six years service. Claire was in the prime of her life. We all knew of her love for horses and for her sport but we also knew her for being a committed police officer who found challenge and reward in serving the local community and in keeping people safe throughout the Lisburn and Castlereagh District.

“Claire’s untimely death has caused shock amongst her friends and colleagues across PSNI. She will be very much missed by all of us and her loss will be deeply felt for a long time to come.”

Superintendent Wright concluded: “Our thoughts are with Claire’s family and friends at this tragic and difficult time.”

Alderman Michael Henderson, Chairman of Lisburn & Castlereagh Policing and Community Safety Partnership (PCSP), added: “I have just been informed of the death of Claire Lowe in a tragic hunting accident yesterday afternoon. Claire, as a serving police officer based in Lisburn, was a much respected and committed officer who served the community within Lisburn and Castlereagh without fear or favour. On behalf of Lisburn & Castlereagh PCSP, I would like to offer my deepest sympathy to Claire’s family, friends and colleagues.”
