Tributes to Third Carrick musician

Tribute has been paid to Third Carrick musician Peter Arthurs who died suddenly on Tuesday.

Peter had been a soprano cornet player and conductor of the youth band.

Mr. Arthurs had also been a music tutor at Carrickfergus Grammar School for ten years.

A Union flag is flying at half mast at the North Road school as a mark of respect.

Principal Kieran Mulvenna said that Peter had played a “very active role in the school”.

“Our music department is very much in mourning,” he added.

“He was a much liked person.”

Mr. Mulvenna indicated that the school will be represented at Peter’s funeral on Saturday (June 17) at Ballycarry Presbyterian Church.

A statement on the school’s Facebook page read: “Carrickfergus Grammar School Music Society, with the heaviest of hearts, mourn the passing of their great friend and teacher Peter Arthurs and wish to extend their sincere sympathy to his wife Gillian, little Isabella his daughter, wider family circle and his friends in Third Carrick Silver Band.

“For over ten years, Peter inspired pupils and colleagues with his musicianship, wisdom, care and humour. He is and will be sorely missed by all of us.”

Third Carrick Band said: “It is with immense sadness that we have learned of the sudden and untimely death of our esteemed member and friend Peter Arthurs.

“On behalf of the entire band, we extend our deepest sympathy to his wife Gillian, daughter Isabella, sister Cathryn, brother-in-law Gary, his mother and father and the entire family circle at this time.”

Peter’s funeral service will be followed by burial at Islandmagee New Cemetery.
