Trocaire get cheque courtesy of St. Brigid’s

At a special Easter assembly the pupils of St. Brigid’s Primary School, Ballymoney handed over a cheque for £838.17 to Trócaire.

During the Lenten season the pupils at St. Brigid’s have been learning about issues affecting the lives of children in the Developing World. In particular the pupils have been studying life in Uganda. Through their work in Religion classes and The World Around Us [science, history, geography] the pupils have learnt about the issues that impact on the lives of people in developing countries. Historical comparisons have made too to the Great Potato Famine in Ireland, an important part of the older pupils’ history syllabus.

At the beginning of Lent the children gave small daily contributions to their class Lenten Trócaire boxes and studied how Trócaire used that money in the Developing World. Towards the end of Lent the children themselves organised whole school fundraising activities including a non-uniform Green Day for the St. Patrick’s Holiday, bun sales and a new fundraiser this year – bingo! Pupils, staff, parents and indeed grandparents thoroughly enjoyed their game of bingo.

Mr Conlon [school Principal] was particularly pleased with the children, ‘The pupils have a deep appreciation of the needs of other children. It is wonderful to see our pupils think of others. Social justice is an important part of their faith development and we are very proud of all our children.’
